Life can be overwhelming at times. You may find yourself reacting in ways you later regret, feeling emotionally flooded, shutting down during conflict, or struggling to communicate your needs effectively. If it feels like your emotions are running the show instead of you, DBT might be the exact tool you need.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed to help you develop practical skills to deal with life's challenges without becoming overwhelmed by them. Rather than feeling trapped by intense emotions, you'll learn how to steady yourself, respond more effectively, and build healthier relationships with the people around you.

Thankfully, with the right tools and support, DBT therapy will help you learn to manage difficult emotions, communicate your needs more effectively, and create lasting changes in how you respond to life's challenges.

What Is Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based therapy designed to help you better understand, regulate, and respond to intense emotions.

Originally developed to support individuals who experience significant emotional distress, DBT has become one of the most effective approaches for helping people build emotional resilience, improve relationships, and cope with life's challenges.

DBT combines acceptance and change. It helps you acknowledge your experiences without judgment while also learning practical skills to create positive changes in your life.

Four crucial DBT skill areas:

Mindfulness

You will learn how to stay present, slow down racing thoughts, and respond intentionally rather than reacting automatically.
What brings you to therapy

Distress Tolerance

What Can You Expect From DBT?

One of the reasons our clients find DBT so effective is that it focuses on teaching practical skills that can be applied immediately in real-life situations.

Through DBT, you can learn how to:

  • Stay calm during stressful situations

  • Manage intense emotions more effectively

  • Reduce emotional reactivity

  • Improve communication skills

  • Set and maintain healthy boundaries

  • Build stronger relationships

As you practice these skills, you may notice improvements in your relationships, confidence, emotional stability, and overall quality of life.

What Does a DBT Session Look Like?

DBT is an active, collaborative, and skills-focused form of therapy.

During your initial sessions, you'll work with your therapist to understand your current challenges, identify patterns that may be contributing to emotional distress, and establish goals for therapy.

As our sessions progress, DBT therapy may include:

  • Exploring situations that trigger strong emotional reactions

  • Learning and practicing DBT skill

  • Developing strategies for managing difficult emotions

  • Strengthening communication and boundary-setting skills

  • Identifying behaviours that may be keeping you stuck

  • Applying new tools to real-life situations

Meet Lauren Taylor, an Experienced DBT Therapist Working with Clients in California and Oklahoma

Lauren E. Taylor, LMFT
Practice Founder and Clinical Supervisor
EMDR and DBT certified
Licensed in CA, OK and NV

My work as a therapist has been shaped by more than a decade of supporting people through trauma, relationship challenges, and intense emotional experiences.

I began my career in crisis and community mental health settings, working with teens and adults navigating severe mental illness, mood disorders, and high-risk situations. Those early years taught me how to stay present, calm, and effective in moments when clients felt overwhelmed or hopeless.

I help clients understand how thoughts, emotions, and behaviors interact to shape their daily lives. Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), I work with individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, and life transitions to identify unhelpful patterns and develop practical strategies for change.

My approach is warm, collaborative, and tailored to your unique needs. Together, we'll build insight, strengthen coping skills, and create healthier ways of responding to life's challenges. My goal is to help you move beyond simply managing symptoms and toward a more balanced, confident, and fulfilling life.
